What To Wear (And Not Wear!) To Laser Tag
Laser tag is an amazing way to spend your free time, but there are some things you need to know before you head into the arena. Clothing can make all the difference to the experience you have during your game. So, what should you wear, and not wear, to laser tag?
Comfortable clothes are key to a game of laser tag. Loose-fitting clothes that allow a full range of movement will help you enjoy the experience, without restricting you in any way. Darker clothes will also help you blend in better in indoor venues. Neutral colours may be better suited to outdoor games. Make sure you don’t wear anything that could be a safety hazard to yourself or other players, like hanging jewellery.

What To Wear To Laser Tag
Some venues, like here at Velocity Paintball, might provide you with overalls to stop your clothes from getting damaged or dirty during the action. Otherwise, it’s important to think about what you’re wearing and how it might impact the game for you and the other players.
Comfortable clothing, that you don’t mind getting scuffed, is essential for any game of laser tag. Restrictive clothing might also stop you from enjoying the full experience, so make sure you have a full range of movement. Here are a few more tips on what to wear to laser tag:
- Colour: Indoor venues often rely on their dim lighting to enhance the feel of the game. Wearing dark colours will help you to blend in and won’t make you stand out as a target for other players. Playing outdoor laser tag is a little different, with the natural terrain adding a new element. Think about wearing neutral colours, as they’ll help you camouflage in a brighter environment.
- Footwear: The ideal footwear for a game of laser tag is a flat shoe with some grip. Outdoor games have the added element of possibly uneven terrain and weather changes. Rain might make the course a bit slippier, and you’ll need to watch out for holes, so a walking boot might be best to stabilise you and prevent any twisted ankles. For indoor games, trainers will help you to move more quietly, staying undetected and giving you a good chance of victory!
- Accessories: It’s best to avoid wearing any jewellery that could snag or fall off. Laser tag is all about sneaking around, so make sure you aren’t wearing anything that could catch on one of the obstacles. Tying any long hair up and out of the way is also a good idea. Outdoor games might also bring the need for other accessories, like gloves, but just make sure they don’t affect your use of the equipment.
- Weather: There’s always the influence of weather to think about, particularly in outdoor games. The excitement of the action might have you warmer than usual, so breathable clothes will help with the sweating. If it’s cooler outside, you can layer up. Be prepared to shed some clothes though to stop yourself from overheating. Learn more about how the weather can impact games in our blog, Can You Play Laser Tag Outside?
Can You Wear Shorts To Laser Tag?
Loose-fitting shorts might be helpful when you start moving around and get warm. Some venues might not allow them, however, so it could be a good idea to check before you travel for your day out.
When playing outdoor laser tag, it might be better to wear long trousers, along with long-sleeved tops. This will provide an extra barrier for any scrapes and scratches that might happen as a result of the more natural environment.
Should You Wear Jeans To Laser Tag?
You can wear jeans to laser tag, just make sure they’re not too tight or uncomfortable. You don’t want to restrict your movement and stop yourself from enjoying the full potential of the game. Wearing old clothing would be an added bonus too, because there is a risk of scuffs and stains, especially outdoors.
Should You Wear All Black To Laser Tag?
Dark clothing, like black or blue, is probably the best choice for playing laser tag in an indoor venue. They often rely on dim rooms and ultraviolet (UV) light to make the environment as immersive as possible. Lighter colours will glow under UV lights, so staying hidden will rely on those darker clothes to help you blend in.
Outdoor venues are a bit more forgiving, with the lighter colours coming in handy for camouflaging in brighter environments. Neutral colours can also help you blend into the nature around you, so think about what’s best for your game-playing strategy.
What Should You Not Wear To Laser Tag?
There are a few clothing choices that could cause extra trouble during your game. Avoiding these is key to making your experience as good as possible, so here are a few of our tips on what to avoid wearing during laser tag:
- Jewellery: As we mentioned earlier, wearing any jewellery that hangs and could snag should be avoided. Earrings, necklaces, rings or bracelets could get caught on the obstacles around you or even other players. You also don’t want to lose your jewellery in the arena, so leaving it at home is probably best.
- Loose Clothing: It is best to wear clothes that aren’t too tight, but clothing that is way too loose can also cause problems. They could get caught on the obstacles around the venue, or could cause you to trip. Make sure you feel comfortable moving around and everything you’re wearing is safe.
- Unsuitable Footwear: Wearing shoes that are heeled or open-toed, for example, aren’t the best for a game like laser tag. You need to be able to move around comfortably and quietly, so flat shoes are the best option. The game is fast-paced, so wearing closed shoes will protect your feet if you get close to other players.

What Age Is Best For Laser Tag?
Here at Velocity Paintball, our laser tag sessions or parties are available to anyone over the age of seven. Yes, that includes the parents! This minimum age is enforced to make sure children are safe to roam the battlefield and enjoy the games!
Is Laser Tag Safe?
As it’s a no-impact game, laser tag is considered safer than paintball, for example. Some care might need to be taken around some of our natural obstacles and terrain. At Velocity Paintball, we restrict contact and ask that our players don’t run to make sure everyone is safe and having fun!
