Can You Play Laser Tag Outside?
Laser tag is an amazing experience for all ages. Some people often prefer it to other activities, like paintball, because it’s a no-impact game. Indoor venues can bring excitement with lights, fog machines, and maze-like arenas. But, outdoor courses can bring a whole new side to a firm favourite. So, let’s get down to it – can you even play laser tag outside?
Laser tag can be played outside. Both natural and man-made obstacles make for a more interesting course. Open spaces and tactical structures can force players to be more strategic. They also add realism that indoor venues might not offer.
Read on to find out more about outdoor laser tag venues and what makes them an attractive option for your free time.
Can You Play Laser Tag In The Daylight?
Yes, you can play laser tag in broad daylight. Natural, realistic environments can make your game much more exciting. They will also challenge players’ skills in ways different from those seen in indoor venues.
Indoor venues are often dimly lit, so equipment functions without outside influences. Sunlight can impact the way sensors detect the beams emitted by laser tag guns. However, there are ways to keep the game high quality and enjoy the changes outdoor venues can bring. You’ll find out more about how this works below.
How Does Outdoor Laser Tag Work?
With adapted equipment, outdoor venues offer the same game quality as indoor courses. Improvements have been made to outdoor equipment, but here are a few things that can maintain the game experience:
- Advanced sensors can better tell the difference between natural light and beams from the laser tag guns.
- Reflective clothing serves as a target area, bouncing beams back to the sensors and improving hit detection.
- Shading elements, like tunnels and structures, can create areas where the sun’s impact on gameplay is reduced.
Why Should You Play Laser Tag Outdoors?
Outdoor playing fields offer a benefit that takes it one step further than indoor venues. The experience is much closer to that of traditional combat. The combination of natural and man-made obstacles enhances your game and challenges you to a new level.
Playing laser tag outside is also a great way to get up and move. The running, hiding and strategising involved provides an amazing form of exercise. Being out in the fresh air (and away from your screens!) is better for everyone.
Accessibility is another reason outdoor laser tag is a great choice. Players don’t need to use physical contact, so sporting ability doesn’t matter. Everyone can have the exact same experience, no matter what.

Can You Play Laser Tag In The Rain?
Laser tag equipment can be water resistant and be used in light rain. However, some systems are not entirely waterproof, so heavy showers might put an end to your fun. Rain might also make the outdoor venues a little more slippery, so you may need to be a bit more careful.
Here at Velocity Paintball, our equipment can handle heavy rain, so we’ll always try and carry on with the game, no matter the weather. The only exception is if we are advised not to carry out games by the Met Office due to unsafe weather conditions.
Can You Play Laser Tag At Night?
Typically, indoor venues are dimly lit to enhance the environment. Laser tag equipment still works in low light, and the use of lighting and reactive paints can add a new feel to the game. Again, there are slight risks that come with playing laser tag at night. Staying aware of your surroundings throughout the excitement should minimise any injuries.
What Do You Wear For Outdoor Laser Tag?
At Velocity Paintball, we provide overalls to players. This stops your clothes from getting dirty or damaged during the excitement of the game. We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing that isn’t restrictive as well as shoes with a bit of a grip that might stop you from slipping. Trainers, boots and hiking shoes are usually a good choice.

Outdoor Laser Tag FAQ
Is Laser Tag Safe?
Laser tag is a low-impact game, so injuries are less likely as it doesn’t use the same projectiles seen in paintball. Instead, the equipment uses infrared light to mimic lasers. This is the same energy used in remote controls for your TV, for example.
That being said, bruises and sprains are always a possibility, particularly in outdoor venues. The natural terrain can take some agility and the environment may be much less soft. Wearing the right clothing and footwear can reduce this risk.
Are You Allowed To Run In Laser Tag?
To minimise the risk of tripping or injury, we ask that players don’t run during games. Our venue is purpose-built to provide the best experience, so no running is needed.
How Old Do You Have To Be To Play Laser Tag?
Our laser tag sessions are available for anyone over the age of 7. This is to make sure you can enjoy the game and it’s safe for you to traverse the course.
